Stupp Bridge Company    fabricated the steel girders for Irvine Bypass.
This job utilizes weathering steel.
This means that no field painting is required.
The steel contains higher copper content which prevents oxidation after the initial bloom.
The girders will show a uniform color after a period of 6 months to a year.
Weathering steel bridges are cost effective (save the taxpayers $$$)as there are no maintenance costs for painting.
Weathering steel saves the fabricator money by eliminating the cost and time factor associated with shop painting.
The natural beauty of brownish/orange steel is another reason for choosing weathering steel.
The bridge is made up of 10 spans.
The shorter spans 1-4 and 8-10 are made of concrete girders/beams and the center spans 5, 6 & 7 are the steel girders fabricated by Stupp Bridge Company in Bowling Green, KY.
Steel is more suitable for longer spans.
There is approximately 750 tons of steel girders in the bridge.
The length and weight of the girders were:
  1. 8 girders @140'long @ 57,000 lbs each
  2. 8 girders @137'long @ 98,000 lbs each
  3. 4 girders @122'long @ 51,000 lbs each
All of these girders were delivered by truck to the job site.
The steel is designed to turn a dark brown which will fit into the natural environment.
This is called "weathering steel." It will never require paint.
